The Street Scene Greenfield team has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the equivalent of the MBE for volunteer groups.
Now the team, a sub group of the Greenfield and Grasscroft Residents’ Association, has revealed its toughest challenge….keeping news of the win secret.
“It’s a very special honour,” said co-ordinator, Peter Lowe who, with assistant, Steph Pelmore, attended the Queen’s Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on May 16.
“We were told by the QAVS team at the end of April but the formal announcement only appeared in the London Gazette on June 1. “
It included Peter’s citation about the group: “Working inclusively for, with and throughout our Community to build respect for where we live.”
SSGG was one of only eight groups in Greater Manchester to receive the coveted Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
They were told: “The work your group does for the community was very much admired by the independent Assessment Committee, chaired by Sir Martyn Lewis CBE.”
Peter added: “The Award is not only for the SSGG team but also for all the volunteers who have worked with them tirelessly over the years in so many different capacities.”
The official logo is currently being reproduced and will appear on all SSGG communications in the future.
A formal presentation including a certificate signed by the Queen, will be presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester in due course.
SSGG was formed in January 2009 with the aim of giving Greenfield village an identity rather than just a cut through from Uppermill to Dovestone Reservoir.
Since then village heritage signs have been erected, a living Christmas tree planted for the annual Christmas Lights switch on, community litter picks undertaken, street and road signs cleaned, planters erected, flowers grown and extensive refurbishment wok on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath.
* Greenfield’s annual Christmas Lights switch on will take place for 2017 on Saturday, November 25.
