OLDHAM COUNCIL is hosting a co-operative street market as part of the Your Oldham Festival to inform people of the vast array of activities and initiatives available.
The street market – on Wednesday 28 June – aims to inspire and inform people about all the great co-operative work taking place across the borough and beyond.
The event will take place in Oldham town centre, 10am – 4pm, and will host a range of stalls – all showcasing inspiring initiatives you can get involved with.
Oldham’s Environmental Services Team will be there talking about what’s happening across Oldham’s fantastic parks and green spaces this summer.
Staff from Oldham’s Lifelong Learning Centre will also be on hand to give residents information on learning opportunities in Oldham.
Find out about the youth work going on at Mahdlo, Oldham’s state-of-the-art youth centre, and discover how to get the children involved.
Food lovers can see what the Real Junk Food has been cooking up with the community and get tips and tricks on how to reuse left over food.
Gallery Oldham, the Green Dividend Fund, Action Together, Hack Oldham and Positive Steps will also have stalls.
There is also the opportunity to attend a Street Wisdom walks, giving you the opportunity to really focus on the world around you, taking in the signs and signals we normally don’t notice.
Councillor Barbara Brownridge, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Cooperatives, said: “We think this will be an excellent event and I hope the market street gives residents an insight into all the excellent work that’s taking place across the borough.
“I encourage everyone to pop into the town centre on the day, even if it’s just for an hour, and get some insight into the co-operative way of working.
“We have some great initiatives across Oldham and we want to get as many residents doing their bit to show they really do love where they live.
The council and its partners are committed to developing a co-operative future. Put simply, this is about everybody doing their bit and everybody benefitting.
“It’s not just about delivering services, it’s about working in a way which helps to empower residents to take greater control of their own lives – but also get the maximum benefit from the resources that are available to the community and public sector.
The celebrations will continue in September when Oldham Council hosts the Your Oldham Festival – a week-long programme of events around the co-operative theme.
Events will include a family fun day at Castleshaw Centre, EPIC talks, an Environment Day, a Digital Roadshow and a Your Future event.
The Festival is about inspiring residents, businesses and employees to get involved and do their bit for Oldham. More information will be revealed nearer the time.
