SADDLEWORTH’S OLIVIA Green helped Great Britain girls win a pentathlon bronze medal in the U19 European Cup in Spain.
The 17-year-old from Lydgate teamed up with Stroud’s Zoe Davison and Georgina Mitchell, from Warwick, to finish third.
Athletes from 11 nations provided a stern test for the British girls who found it a fantastic learning experience at Sant Boi, near Barcelona.
The weekend began with the swimming and Olivia, who is ranked number one in Great Britain at U19 level, and her five British team mates all finished in the top nine positions.
In the fencing salle Olivia, who claimed victory at the recent GB youth international, had 16 victories and the same number of defeats.
It meant all six Brits were well placed after two disciplines with Olivia inside the top 10 in both.
A thrilling laser-run ensued with Olivia recording the eighth quickest time of the discipline to move up to seventh in the overall standings and finish as the top British athlete.
Sunday saw the mixed relay taking place with Olivia paired with Hampshire’s George Budden for the swim and laser run.
They finished as the top British pairing in fourth position, just missing out on a podium spot.
Though Olivia, a pupil a Oldham Hulme Grammar School, enjoyed success, dad Chris admitted it was not her best competition.
He added the main focus is the world U19 championships in the Czech Republic in mid-July.
Before then, Olivia will continue her build up with competitions in Bath and Solihull.
Olivia, who is a member of the World Class Talent Programme, finished fifth in the worlds last year and will be looking to improve on that this time round.
