The 13-year-old pupil from Saddleworth School helped the Northern under-14 win the Regional Underwater Hockey Tournament which was staged at Newport, South Wales.

It is the latest success for Daniel who also won a silver in a tournament at Batley, West Yorkshire.

Daniel, a member of the Dukinfield-based Xarifa club, took up the sport less than three years ago as his friends Daniel and Lauren Saville, of Grasscroft, already participated.

And Daniel took to this unusual form of hockey like a duck to water as he plays in midfield in the six-a-side team.

Daniel, a keen fell runner and also a former rugby player for Saddleworth Rangers, says it is his ambition to play for Great Britain.

The Xarifa club has been having fun at Dukinfield Pool since January 2005. It has around 30 members aged between eight and 16 years and many players have successfully gone on to play for GB squads.

Xarifa has two sessions, juniors from eight years old on a Friday evening at Dukinfield and seniors, including teenagers, on a Tuesday at Wright Robinson School, Manchester, on the border between Audenshaw and Denton, allowing more time and space for the different age categories to play a better game.

Beginners can have a free trial, it’s easy to have a go, but have to prove they can swim four lengths before being allowed to join the club.
