Mixed fortunes for Saddleworth School rugby teams

SADDLEWORTH SCHOOL’S year seven rugby team’s dream of running out on the hallowed turf at Wembley was ended following a 24-0 defeat by a strong St Peters outfit from Orrell in the quarter finals of the Carnegie Champion Schools’ Cup.

Unable to get a foothold in the game, playing up a steep hill, Saddleworth trailed 14-0 at the interval.

A spirited second half performance saw Blake Morgan have a try ruled out for a knock on over the opposition’s goalline, the closest Saddleworth came to registering any points.

A series of unforced errors were duly punished by the slick Wigan side as the hosts progressed to the semi-finals.

Vinny Fitzgerald was voted player of the match for Saddleworth on his return to action from a broken arm and Finn Winterbottom made some crucial tackles in only his second appearance for the school.

The team will now focus on the Oldham Schools’ Cup where they will face Waterhead Academy in the semi-final, in a match to be played after the Easter break.

THE YEAR 10 rugby team defeated Crompton House 18-10 in a great
encounter in tough weather conditions in the Oldham Schools’ Cup.

Tries came from Reeves Burr, Sam Thackeray and Will Marston while three conversions were added by Josh Yarwood.

Reeves Burr was player of the match and a special mention to Connor Ratcliffe who was excellent on his debut.
