Artists in residence International painting group to visit Saddleworth

A GROUP of international artists are returning to Saddleworth this summer and residents are invited to become part of the wider picture.Painters from France, Switzerland, German and America, as well as local artists, are taking part in the weeklong collective based in Diggle.

But volunteers are required to ensure the success of the annual ‘painting days’ experience first held in Seyssel, France in 1996.

Host families are being sought to offer accommodation, transport and subsistence during the visitors’ stay.

The event, being staged in Saddleworth for the first time in five years, runs from Monday, July 4 to Friday, July 10.

Artists taking part are coming from: Tournon sur Rhone (France),Geneva (Switzerland), Meissen (Germany) and Wheeling in West Virginia.

During the stay, work is exhibited each evening with a grand finale exhibition at the end of the week. All work is for sale.

Helen Campbell is one of the local organisers and says: “Do you have the generosity, enthusiasm and kindness to give an artist or two bed and breakfast in your home for the week they are here?

“It is a fun thing to do and you may, as I have, become lifelong friends with your guests.

“Your gift for doing this kindness is a picture from your artist of your choosing at the end of the week.

“You also are invited to come to some of the evening events, although some small cost for meals may have to be made. These are really fun evenings.”

Helen is also seeking help to bring the visitors to and from Manchester Airport and to the painting base at Diggle Band Club.

Helen added: “We give all our artists a nourishing packed lunch. We need help please with any of the following : to shop; to put the lunches together and funds.

“Actual money as you can imagine is always very helpful. But donations in kind or in time is hugely appreciated e.g. arty bits and bobs that our artists might use that could go in their welcome bags.

“All donors may get their company logo on our magazine for the week which we will put together.”
