A LANDMARK but diseased tree in Uppermill faces the axe.
But Oldham Council have pledged to replace the majestic cedar tree that towers above visitors to St Chad’s Gardens and Uppermill Library.
The felling of the tree, traditionally adorned with some of the village’s Christmas lights, “will happen quite soon,” according to Oldham’s Senior Arboricultural and Countryside Officer, Nik Anderson.
He adds: “Regrettably we have to remove the large Cedar tree that is close up to the library building.
“Like several others across Oldham it is infected with a disease called sirococcus and the long term prognosis is not good.”
However, Mr Anderson and his colleagues in the Greenspace Development Team are looking at providing a replacement, although numbers, location and species hasn’t been decided.
