THE TALENTED Delph Band has qualified once more for the National Championships after clinching third place in the North West regional contest.
The band has had a busy start to the year, including numerous events over the festive period and a concert with The Houghton Weavers in February.
They then recently secured a strong fourth place position at the Brass at the Guild contest in Preston, followed by their place win in Blackpool at the North West Regional contest.
This success means the band, which was formed in 1850 and is one of Saddleworth’s oldest, has qualified for the National Championships in Cheltenham this September.
The band has already won the National Championships twice: once in 1980 in the Fourth Section and more recently in 2010 in the Third Section.
The band said: “It is quite an honour for the band to compete in the prestigious contest for a third time in the Second Section.
“Delph Band is proud to have managed to maintain its village ethos alongside high standards of performance. The band really is at the heart of the Delph community.”
Many players have been in the band for decades including cornet player Andrew Skeldon, who was awarded a certificate for over 40 years’ service.
There is a thriving Youth Band for any youngsters wanting to get involved.
The band has a very busy few months ahead, with usual events such as Whit Sunday, Whit Friday, concerts and marches.
Additionally they will now be fundraising in order to get to Cheltenham, and has many fun events and musical extravaganzas planned for the summer in order for this to be achieved.
