Mum-of-two Bev Ridyard decided to support the Gift of Books campaign after reading recent statistics that 40,000 children in Greater Manchester don’t own a book.

The National Literacy Trust found that one in eight of the most disadvantaged children in the area don’t have their own books at home.

Keen reader Bev, who runs ‘Inspired By Joseph’ photography, decided to do something about it by supporting a book collection being run by Stockport business cartridgesave.co.uk, in partnership with the National Literacy Trust.

Bev said: “Books are THE number one thing in our house, over toys or TV any day.

“Frequent trips to the library, books purchased as treats and a heavily received item at birthday, Christmas and Easter means we literally have more books than sense.

“As a Trustee for four schools in Greater Manchester too, I couldn’t ignore these statistics. Books are essential in all children’s lives and more importantly, education.”

Bev is running the collection from Monday, March 26 for ten days and is looking locals to donate books, preferably new or in a very good condition.

All people need to do is add a personalised note (download here) about why the like the book, and contact Bev through her Facebook page to arrange delivery or collection.

The donated books will then be redistributed to children in Greater Manchester that are identified as being in the areas of greatest need.

The active mum also held a World Kindness Day event last November offering free photoshoots to mums in return for donations of baby clothes and items for Barnardo’s.
