Firefighters tackle blazing moorland fires above Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield

SCORES of firefighters and emergency service teams tackled moorland fires which blazed above Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield.

On Wednesday, April 18 crews were on the scene to extinguish the fires which raged on the hills.

Then the fires returned on Thursday, April 19 and spread even further across the valley.

At the time of the incident, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said on their Twitter account: “There are over 20 vehicles in attendance, including 11 fire engines.

“The fire is roughly 2km X 2km in size, after 2 smaller fires combined. Please avoid the area around Dovestones for now.”

After hours tackling the flames and smoke, the fire subsided and GMFRS commented: “The fire is down to one sector with three fire engines, a wildfire unit along with United Utilities and air support from @LancashireFRSstill in attendance.

“Crews will remain at the incident for the next hour to monitor hotspots but the worst is over.”

A GMFRS spokesperson said: “It is too early at this point to determine the cause of the fire.”
