The Christie Allsorts began holding quizzes, walks and events in February to fundraise on behalf of the Christie Charity and hit their target at the end of August – four months early.

The group joined other fundraisers, the BBC, and Christie Staff at Media City in Manchester for the launch of the unit, which cost in excess of £450,000.

It will based in a different area of Greater Manchester each day of the week to bring its services to as many patients as possible.

Christine Harrop, chair of the Christie Allsorts, said: “The day was amazing: to see the unit was fascinating and to understand how everyday it has to be put together like a jigsaw is incredible.

“Patients in the local communities can now benefit from this incredible unit and service which is just the same as going to The Christie.

“As a team we wanted to achieve a target of £10,000 before the end of December to help towards the purchase and running costs of the unit but thanks to the generosity of friends, family and incredible supporters we were able to reach that goal in just under six months.

“We are now forging forward with more events until the end of the year to raise as much as we can towards the running costs, which are anticipated to be around £700,000. We will then look at a new project for 2014.

“For everyone who has supported the Christie Allsorts, when you see the Mobile Chemotherapy Unit on the road, please feel incredibly proud that you helped to pay towards it.”
