Greenfield cyclist raises £14,600 in memory of grandson Finley

A GREENFIELD grandfather has completed an almost 1,000-mile cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats, raising an incredible £14,600 in memory of his grandson Finley.

Mike Coulter took on the gruelling journey across Great Britain to support Little Cloud, a charity helping bereaved families create precious memories following the loss of a baby.

The challenge had a deeply personal meaning for Mike and his family as it was completed in memory of Finley, his grandson who was born sleeping.

Mike had previously cycled the famous Land’s End to John O’Groats route 10 years ago, but this time every mile was dedicated to Finley.

The journey saw him tackle difficult terrain and some particularly challenging conditions, including fierce winds and driving rain in the Highlands.

On one day, the team was forced to stop early after a member began showing signs of hypothermia.

Mike said: “This ride was about much more than cycling from one end of the country to the other.

“It was about remembering Finley, raising awareness, and supporting a charity whose work makes such a difference to families during the most difficult times imaginable.

“There were some incredibly tough days on the road. In the Highlands we battled driving rain and strong winds and, on one day, had to stop early because a member of the team was showing signs of hypothermia.

“But whenever things became difficult, remembering why we were riding helped us keep going.”

Little Cloud works with hospitals and hospices to help families experiencing baby loss create lasting memories with their child.

Its work includes providing specialist training, resources and materials to healthcare teams, including support to offer 3D hand and foot casting and tiny clothing.

The charity is working towards making memory-making opportunities available at every hospital and hospice across the UK and Ireland.

Supporters were able to follow Mike’s progress throughout the challenge through regular updates and online tracking.

By the time he reached John O’Groats, the ride had generated an impressive £14,600 for the charity.

Mike added: “To have raised £14,600 is amazing, and I want to thank everyone who donated, shared our story, and supported us throughout the journey.

“Every mile was for Finley. Reaching John O’Groats was emotional, but knowing that the money raised will help other families create precious memories of their babies makes every pedal stroke worthwhile.”

And after almost 1,000 miles in the saddle, the Greenfield cyclist may not be finished with ambitious challenges.

Mike said there is already talk of a future Trans-African cycling expedition, although some recovery time will come first.
