Helicopter rescue after walker breaks ankle at Dove Stone

A WALKER was airlifted from the hills above Dove Stone after suffering a broken ankle and becoming unable to make her way down safely.

The Coastguard helicopter was called to the Ashway Gap area on Saturday, September 12, after the woman got into difficulty.

According to Greater Manchester Police, she was located by officers before volunteer mountain rescue personnel from Boarshurst station in Greenfield assessed and treated her.

Her injury was immobilised before rescuers helped move her to a suitable location where the Coastguard helicopter could land.

She was then airlifted from the hills, with GMP saying the incident was resolved quickly.

Police have used the rescue to remind visitors that walks around Dove Stone and the surrounding hills can be more challenging than they may appear on social media.

Wet weather on Saturday made conditions particularly difficult, with walkers being urged to make sure they have suitable footwear, warm clothing and waterproofs.

GMP said: “Dovestones is often portrayed on social media as an easy walk, when in reality conditions can change rapidly.

“Today’s wet weather made the terrain challenging, and suitable footwear, warm clothing and waterproofs were essential.

“Please plan ahead and come prepared before heading into the hills.”
