FESTIVE CHEER will be spread through the creations of Saddleworth residents as Uppermill’s ‘living’ advent calendar returns this year with the theme of Christmas music.
The project, inspired by similar scenes in Saltaire, encourages residents and local groups to decorate their window with beautiful displays for villagers and tourists alike to discover and admire.
The calendar’s first window was revealed on November 30 – the first Sunday of advent – at Uppermill Methodist centre.
More fun creations will be revealed every evening from 4pm-9pm until Christmas Eve and each window will be visible from its designated date until the calendar finishes on Twelfth Night.
So many people have been eager to get involved following the success of last year’s event that on some days two new vibrant designs will be available for villagers to view.
And feedback last year showed it was not only the public who loved the event but creators also really enjoyed the opportunity to bring something unique to Uppermill.
Organiser Erica said: “One of the nicest things is how it has brought together a group of people who didn’t know each other before.”
She added that she recognises the challenge of the design and creation of the displays but said the public’s positive reaction to last year’s calendar and excitement for this year is very encouraging.
The calendar succeeded in bringing festive cheer to Saddleworth last year and will no doubt evoke a similar Christmas spirit to brighten advent 2014.
The music theme may even enliven a few rounds of Christmas carols to echo through the frost covered streets.
