A MOTORIST was tasered and beaten by two masked men during a frightening attempted robbery in Uppermill.
The man in his fifties suffered bruising to his face and body as he tried to prevent attackers stealing his new car in Kenworthy Gardens on Friday, August 24.
He believes his fate could have been worse but for passers-by who scared off the assailants thought to have driven off in a white car.
A £5,000 reward has now been offered by the victim’s company to help catch the criminals.
The attack is the second of its kind in Saddleworth this month. A woman’s car was stolen in Greenfield by two men who followed her home on Tuesday, August 14.
Two businessmen immediately put up a £1,000 reward and a neighbourhood watch meeting for Greenfield residents will take place at the Royal George on Wednesday, September 5 at 7.30pm.
Police are also appealing for information about four suspicious incidents involving a red Ford Fiesta that took place in Oldham and Rochdale on Friday, August 24, 2018.
The spree was triggered when three men broke into a property on Ripponden Road in Denshaw.
“I don’t want the sympathy vote,” the victim of the latest attack told the Independent. “But people need to know what is happening.
“It’s a lovely place to live and for something like that to happen is just unbelievable.”
The man was on his way to meet golfing pals in Muse on Uppermill High Street for a drink when he was struck from behind.
“I think I was just unlucky because I think these guys were waiting for anyone,” he said.
“I am not a tall chap and I think they have thought ‘here is an oldish guy’ let’s have him.
“I started to jog up the road to get to Muse. Suddenly, I felt this almighty bang on the head and I fell to the floor.
“As I tried to get up there was a guy with a mask leaning over me shouting at me; ‘give me your keys, give me your keys.’
“I lashed out and managed to catch him He fell back and this other guy came in and stuck the boot in. I went back down on the floor.
“One of them had a machine that was sending an electric charge across these prongs and he was stabbing it into my face.
“The first few times it was an unbelievable pain and then the other guys became back screaming at me to give him the keys.
“I managed to scramble a few yards up the road but they got me again.
“One tried to get his hands in my pocket to get the keys but I managed to stop that.
“I got to my feet and thankfully there was a couple walking across the road. The guy came to walk over and the two lads ran off.
“If that couple hadn’t walked past and seen what was going on, this could have been a completely different story. They saved the day.
“I think the men would have kept going until they had got the keys off me. But they would have had to put me unconscious to do that.
“I just thought ‘you are not having my car’. Maybe in hindsight I should have given them the keys and let them take it.
“I am a pretty tough sort of character so I am alright in that sense.
“But my body ache s like hell. My ribs are bruised and sore and the side of my face is pretty swollen.
“Someone less timid than me might not have got over it. I moved up here from Failsworth because of all the trouble.
“I love Uppermill, I play golf at Saddleworth and thought it would be the ideal place to go. I never heard anything and suddenly this happens.”
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly after 10:10pm on Friday 24 August 2018, police were called to Kenworthy Gardens, Uppermill to reports that a man had been assaulted.
“It was further reported that then man had been tasered during the assault before the two offenders fled the scene.”
