New Hugo & Me store brings organic babywear to Uppermill High Street

‘YOU care about the planet. You care about your baby. It’s only natural that you’d want organic, ethical clothing for your treasured little one.’

If your thoughts match these of mum-of-one Victoria Shuttleworth then her new organic babywear store in Uppermill is just the place for you.

The former Oldham Hulme Grammar pupil set up her part-time business about two years ago after becoming a parent but struggling to find organic baby or toddler wear.

And after seeing the business flourish, Victoria took the leap to open her first store on the village high street just before Christmas.

“When I first set up Hugo & Me as a little part-time business I never thought it would ever get to this,” admitted Victoria, who named the company after her son.

“I wanted baby clothes that differed from the standard ‘organic’ style and instead offered cool, sleek and high-quality options, including neutral tones and contemporary designs.

“I began to trawl the web, discovering lots of amazing small brands and then I thought, why not bring them all together into one website?

“That would mean a one-stop shop for style-conscious parents who want beautiful organic babywear and eco-friendly baby clothes. We’ve done the browsing so you don’t have to.

“And that’s how we started off. But we’ve since expanded to offer contemporary nursery furniture, décor and toys that bring you the best choice for building a beautiful nursery.

“It is really difficult to show the quality of our products online, no matter how good the photos are so I felt it was important to open a store in the village where I grew up so customers can come in to see and feel all the products so they really know what they are buying.”

Victoria designed the store herself, opting for neutral and unisex colours like the products, and keeping it spacious and bright.

The brand’s identity features the tagline ‘Be Unique Baby’ to reflect its strategy of selling products not available elsewhere.

“I have designed the store to be a pram friendly space,” added Victoria, who will be helped in the store, which is next door to Oliviccio, by mum Jo.

“We have several baby-friendly facilities including a toilet with a baby changer, milk heating facilities and space for breastfeeding.

“We also have many of our toys accessible for babies and children to play with as parents/relatives browse, ensuring that shopping with us is an enjoyable and stress-free experience, even with babies and children in tow.”

Hugo & Me are supporting local charity Cascade Baby Bundles in Tameside, which helps families in need by distributing new and pre-loved clothing and essential items to their little ones.

The shop will act as a drop off point for anyone wanting to donate baby clothing and essentials in the future.

  1. Another children’s clothes shop, how many does one village need! One is already selling organic clothes so not exactly a fresh idea. The village needs diversity not more of the same, salons, coffee shops and now childrens clothes please get some fresh ideas before our Village dies.
