Notorious road junction set for sight improvements

SAFETY work is taking place at a Saddleworth road junction around which two cyclists were killed.

Louise Harrott, from Dukinfield, and Philip Horsfall, of Manchester, both died from injuries sustained in collisions on the A62 in Waterhead in March 2021 and August 2020 respectively.

Even though installing traffic lights has been ruled out because of the congestion they would cause, sight lines in and out of Stamford Road and Dunham Street are set to be improved.Pre-consultation letters were delivered in the area as the authority sought comments on the scheme.

Work to relocate the bus stop immediately next to Stamford Road to improve visibility for drivers looking ‘up’ Huddersfield Road will take place.

Louise, 43, was a popular member of Saddleworth Clarion Cycling Club and was out riding when a black Range Rover turned across her path as it turned onto Stamford Road.

Even though she was wearing a helmet and full cycling equipment at the time, she suffered ‘major’ injuries which proved fatal.

Patricia Goulden, the driver of the Range Rover, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving at Manchester Magistrates Court.

Last June, she was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and banned from driving for two years.
