CARING LOCALS came together at an annual vigil held by Saddleworth Peace Group in remembrance of the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

The vigil saw the Group joined by residents and special guests, including the Mayor of Oldham Councillor Shadab Qumer and his Mayoress, at Uppermill Square.

A spokesperson for Saddleworth Peace Group said: “Our members want to make sure the terrible result of dropping of the atom bombs in 1945 is not forgotten, and to work to prevent this ever happening again.

“We also want to make sure that man’s inhumanity to man as demonstrated in the more recent genocides is not forgotten and pledge ourselves to work to prevent this happening in the future.”
