A GENEROUS-SPIRITED Saddleworth Parish Councillor wilted when a dynamic theatre group pleaded ‘Please Sir, I want some more’…
Hard working Cllr Steve Hewitt agreed to take on the role of Mister Bumble in the popular musical ‘Oliver’ to support the Spotlight Theatre Group.
The show’s producer Sylvia Kershaw explained: “Steve came down to pick up Arthur, his son, when we were holding auditions for the show.
“We asked for him to try out for the part of Mr Bumble. He was used to public speaking and he was the right build.
“He did us proud – getting the part with flying colours. He went home a little bit dazed to end up as Mr Bumble!”
The theatrical story didn’t end there, because the councillor’s wife Lesley came to support him at his first rehearsal and discovered someone had dropped out of the production.
“Lesley read for the part and ended up as Mrs Sowerberry,” Sylvia said.
“Their son already had a part in the production, playing Mr Brownlow, so it has become a real family affair.”
She added: “What Steve didn’t know was some of his friends and colleagues already had a nickname for him. Yes, you’ve guessed it – Mr Bumble!”
Steve said: “I’ve never been on the stage in a musical. It was a bit daunting at first but the cast and production team are great people. It’s a great experience.”
’Oliver’ will be performed at East Oldham Methodist Church, Ripponden Road, Oldham, from Wednesday, October 11 to Saturday October 14, starting each night from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £8 for Adults and £6 for Concessions.
