A NEW primary school in Saddleworth, set to open in September 2019, has started to take shape.
The Independent’s exclusive photos shows the first sections of the new Greenfield Primary on Shaw Street being carefully lowered into place by contractors and their machinery.
Throughout the day (Tuesday, December 4) transporters negotiated the village’s narrow streets to deliver the huge structures onto the site of the school’s former playing fields.
When all work is completed the school will have an intake of 60 pupils per year – eventually providing 420 places overall – plus the introduction of 40 extra nursery places.
The existing school, which was built around 110 years ago, will be demolished and replaced by a rounders pitch, 60-metre running track, mini sports pitch and changing rooms.
When proposals were initially announced in December 2015, it was hoped the first new intake would be at their desks by September 2017. However, final permission was only granted in February 2018.
Head teacher Mike Wood previously said: “The school will be a massive boost for the area and it will allow us to provide an outstanding education for more children for many years in a modern, up-to-date environment. With new facilities it means we will go from strength to strength.”
WOW!! How exciting – that is of course if you ignore the flood risk, the lack of car parking space for staff, the lack of a drop off point for parents, the future traffic problems and the lack of playground space – not to mention the fact that modern constructions like this have a very short lifespan. So well done Oldham Council for getting this passed Planning despite all the insurmountable problems.
