A KIND-HEARTED village is helping parents launch a children’s football club by covering the cost of their brand new colourful kits.
Dobcross Village Community donated £272.50 to the Random Bananas and will have their logo printed on the shirts of the new under 7s side.
Club secretary Matt Cocking said: “We would like to thank the DVC for this very kind contribution. The children will be very excited when they see the kits and we are sure will wear them with pride.”
Self-employed structural engineer Matt has teamed up with Nichola and Mike Labrey, and Andrew Clowes to run the club as an extension of the Random Bananas veterans’ team.
The team, which competes in the Saddleworth Veterans League, consists mainly of parents from Holy Trinity School, Dobcross, and they want their children to enjoy the same sporting opportunities.
“Even though we are no Barcelona we all have a great time when we pull on our Random Bananas kit,” said Mike.
“This is exactly what we want the children to experience by having fun, making friends and respecting each other.
“We have started the club with the intention it is a community club where we want every child to feel valued.”
An under 7s side has been set up, and 20 boys and girls from Holy Trinity School will train and play friendly games and tournaments before joining a competitive league.
Matt revealed a ‘Ninos’ soccer school for ages 4-6 is being put in place to help youngsters have fun, build confidence and do some sport and other non-football activities.
“We want all the children to feel included regardless of their ability and skills. It is not all just about football and winning,” he said.
“As we become more established and confident we will look to increase in size while ensuring we still have sufficient coaching resources to continue the one to one style coaching and ensure the learning experience is still fun.”
The under 7s club will train at Saddleworth school on Saturday mornings between 9-10am, with Ninos soccer school running at the same time. Places for under 7s are currently filled but there is a waiting list. There are spaces for six Ninos with a waiting list for more.
Numbers will expand when more volunteers are recruited. Anyone interested in attending or volunteering please contact Matt Cocking on 07771 766691.
