Support group launches for mental health carers

TWO dedicated community workers are bringing together a support group for friends and family involved with loved ones who suffer from conditions that affect their mental health.

Jude Gidney and Helen Bishop will be holding the gathering where people can join them for a brew at 7pm on the last Thursday of every at The Satellite Centre in Greenfield.

“Over the last year or so, Helen and I have noticed a real need in our area to help carers who provide support for young and older individuals with mental health issues,” said Jude, Member Pioneer of the Co-op and director of Saddleworth Community Projects CIC.

“The Satellite is well-suited to this initiative,” added Helen, who is also youth leader of YoLo and a trustee at the centre on Wellington Road.

“Our community venue can provide a relaxed and informal space for people to share issues and difficulties surrounding the loved ones they care for.

“Mutual support doesn’t make the problems faced go away but it should help people develop coping strategies to help them move forward and improve their situation.”

Jude and Helen hope the monthly gatherings will be mutually beneficial for all concerned as people share helpful information, including carers’ rights, funding, holidays and self-care.

Helen said; ‘If you are interested and feel some mutual support could be of help to you, we welcome you to join us for a brew.

“Our next session is on February 27.”
