Plain Starkers, run by Richard Howarth, 22, is inviting food lovers to share the delights of its first product – a mild curry sauce that’s all natural and simple to cook.

Richard, who designed the mix from kitchen hob to shop shelf, said: “We’re really happy to introduce our first product, offering a nutritional and tasty gluten free product that is all natural.

“Our mix is healthy as well as delicious, easy to use as you simply cook your meat or vegetables, add the curry mix powder and water, then simmer for 20 minutes.”

The passionate chef was inspired to launch the company after struggling to find recipes to cook for his grandad Jack and sister Emma after they were recently diagnosed as coeliac.

Determined to produce healthy food suitable for all, Richard’s product is free from nuts, artificial colourings and flavourings, preservatives, genetically modified ingredients and has no added monosodium glutamate.

“There are more than 50,000 people in the UK living with coeliac disease and many more people are moving to gluten free alternatives,” continued Richard.

“They assume gluten free products are healthier but that isn’t necessarily the case as many manufacturers use man-made ingredients to attain the same texture and flavour.

“Plain Starkers’ approach is much different. We use only natural ingredients and ‘old fashioned’ methods of cooking which don’t rely on the use of wheat or gluten containing ingredients.”

Plain Starkers mild curry mix is on sale at local shops including Paul’s Quality Meats and Java in Uppermill, and Terra Nino deli in Greenfield.

You can also purchase it and find out more on their website.
