UKIP and Independent gain Saddleworth seats in local elections

THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS lost two seats in Saddleworth wards to UKIP and Independent candidates in the local elections 2014.

Independent Nicola Kirkham gained the most votes – 1,147 – in Saddleworth North to take the seat off incumbent Lib Dem Alan Roughley.

In Saddleworth West and Lees, there was victory for UKIP candidate Peter Klonowski as his 889 votes secured his place on the council to replace retiring councillor Lib Dem Barbara Beeley.

But Lib Dem John McCann, who has served since 2006 as an OMBC councillor, beat Pam Byrne of the Conservative to hold onto his seat in Saddleworth South.

Turnouts in Saddleworth were among the highest in Oldham, as 34.92% voted in Saddleworth West and Lees, 40.66% in Saddleworth North and 41.88% in Saddleworth South.

The total turnout across Oldham was 35.08% while the highest turnout was achieved in Werneth – 44.21% – and the lowest in Failsworth East – 28.06%.

Overall in the borough, Labour gained one seat, the Lib Dems lost four, the Conservatives were unchanged, UKIP gained two and the Independents gained 1.

This leaves Labour still with a majority and overall control of the council with 45 seats, while the Lib Dems have 10, Conservatives 2, UKIP 2 and Independent 1.
