A HOST of colourful and well-loved comic book and cartoon film characters were spotted lurking around the village during the Delph Donkey Scarecrow Trail 2014.

The trail included 22 scarecrows scattered throughout the area for hunters to seek out and identify.

Winner Jessica Bromley clinched a £50 voucher donated by The Old Bell Inn Restaurant, while second placed N Clark received two tickets to Saddleworth Players 2014/15 season and Thomas Jones in third place received a gift voucher and products from Shear Perfection hairdressers.

Trailblazers named the Old Bell Inn’s Fireman Sam their favourite scarecrow, following up their success from last year with favourite Captain Jack Sparrow.

Finishing a close second was Delph Methodist Church’s Lady Campanula Tottington, made by Jill Davis and based in Country Classics at Pingle Mill, while in third place was Scooby Doo at Delph Crossroads made by Richard and Roberta Daws.

This year the Delph Community Association Committee, who organise the annual trail, have introduced an award for ‘Artistic and Creative Merit’, which was won by Lady Tottington made by Jill Davis.

Sue Lund, from the committee, said: “An excellent number of booklets were sold and a large number of people, several of whom walked the trail in family groups, enjoyed the experience.

“Also the good weather at the weekends over the duration of the Trail contributed to its success!”
