THE NEWLY-ELECTED chief of Saddleworth Round Table has pledged to launch a recruitment drive to boost membership.

Matthew Sykes, who at 32 is the club’s youngest chairman, is a Hulme Grammar School former pupil and has an executive role in the food sales industry.
Austerlands-born Mr Sykes, whose mother Joan is chair of Scouthead and Austerlands Community Group, joined Round Table more than two years ago.
At the club’s AGM at the White Hart at Lydgate, Mr Sykes said: “I am planning an orchestrated drive to encourage more young, local businessmen to join Round Table this year.
“It is a tremendous club based on friendship and a genuine willingness support local good causes.
“We can really be proud of the stalwart efforts by our current loyal members but I am very hopeful we can encourage new ones to join and share our efforts and achievements.”
He praised outgoing chair, Ian Eardley, saying: “Ian has done a terrific job and I intend to continue his upward mission of promoting the club to our local and wider communities.”
Mr Eardley commented: “We staged very successful events during my year including Sadd Fest 13 and last month’s Beer Festival, which funded the hugely popular Winter Wonderland in Uppermill and our old folks Christmas party, which both had record attendances.”
Wishing Mr Sykes a successful upcoming year, Mr Eardley added: “On behalf of Saddleworth Round Table, I would like to thank all the volunteers, local clubs and community groups who continue to offer us their unstinting support.”
Other officers elected were: Kristian Richmond as vice chair, Dave Wood as secretary and Richard Heyes as treasurer.
