Revamp by hard-working councillors restores Parish Cemetery

AN AWARD-WINNING Saddleworth cemetery has received a major makeover thanks to the hard work of dedicated Parish councillors.

The Parish Council cemetery on Gellfield Lane, Uppermill, which was opened in the mid-1980s, was designed to reflect its moorland setting and dramatic views across the area.

But over the years trees and shrubs became overgrown, entrance gates were in need of renovation, views were obscured by dense vegetation and some graves were neglected or poorly maintained.

So around three years ago the Parish Council cemetery sub-committee was tasked with looking at ways to improve the cemetery and give it a much needed makeover.

Since then, the dry stone walls have been rebuilt in parts and missing sections replaced while the oak entrance gates have been renovated and decayed parts replaced.

Overgrown and self-seeded trees have been removed, restoring views and freeing up extra grave spaces, and this work will be continued over the next few years.

And with the help of community pay back, ivy and other vegetation has been removed from the walls and trees.

Ivy and leaf mould has also been removed from entrance paths and their avenues of pine trees trimmed so paths are usable once again, and litter bins have been replaced and re-sited.

And with the co-operation of grave owners, many graves exceeding the 3ft length limit have been returned to lawn and overgrown planted shrubs have been removed or pruned back.

Cllr Enid Firth, chairman of the Saddleworth Parish Council who has been involved in the project, said: “Considerable progress has been made in restoring the cemetery and recovering its original character.

“If you haven’t been to the cemetery for a while it is worth going and having a look at the difference and enjoying the peace of the setting and the magnificent views.

“The work is ongoing and anyone who feels they would like to help with the restoration programme would be most welcome.”
