Saddleworth Golf Club: ROUND UP

JOHN Knight and Jonathan Fancy proved knockouts at Saddleworth Golf Club.

The pair won The Ladcastle, the club’s season-long doubles knockout, after beating Alistair Wright and Ian Gregory 2 and 1 in the final.

And it was a special moment for Knight, a 57-year-old IT network designer from Scouthead, as it was his first major.

He explained: “I have been a member at Saddleworth for more than 25 years and twice previously been second in majors so it was nice to finally get one.

“Conditions were poor but Jon played out of his skin and did very, very well.”

The final of The Wharmton, the singles knockout, has yet to be played. It features Nick Kerin and Richard Cotton.

The JW Holt Trophy produced a win for Stephen Pullen with a score of 66 off his three handicap that has now been reduced to two.

Runner-up was Eddie Hall (67) on the card from Lee Blainey who was third.

The President’s Invitation was won by Steven Wild and Steven Bland who amassed 47 points in the four-ball betterball Stableford to edge out runners up Ben Pullen and Mike Collinge after a card play off.

Third were Joe Ridley and Daniel Marland (45pts) on the card from Ian and Peter Buckley.

LADIES SECTION

Jane Wild won the Marian Read Trophy with a score of 34 points in the Stableford. Runner up was Sue Booth who scored 32.

Deborah Cockburn and Kaye Orme triumphed in the Scott Leggatt Foursomes with 36 points in the Stableford, three clear of runners-up Rosemary Brierley and Ann Allen.

Louise Hinchliffe was an emphatic winner the EWGA medal after a round of 98-29-69. She finished four shots clear of Sue Booth (93-20-73).

A five-club competition produced victory for Rosemary Brierley with 34 points, three ahead of second-placed Janice Nicholson.
