WHEN A brave duo took on a challenging hike to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, they still made sure they had a copy of the Saddleworth Independent on hand to catch up with events back home.
Siblings Becky and Matty Wallis, from Dobcross, climbed to 5,895 metres above sea level to reach the summit of the mountain in Tanzania, Africa.
And they took this picture at 6:37am in -15 degree temperatures after hiking from midnight, to record their success.
Matty said: “Becky still found time to read the local Saddleworth news despite the frostbite, altitude sickness and cold winds. But the photo was a bit rushed due to the cold!”
Becky added: “I certainly didn’t find it a walk in the park, having moments when I thought I would have to drop out because of the challenging conditions.”
Their trip included five days of mountaineering, camping and acclimatisation, as well as working with the Thunder Foundation and a brand new school in Nairobi.
They have currently raised around £750, which will benefit the children directly, and have set a target of £1,000.
Becky added: “We climbed up Kilimanjaro as a personal challenge but also as a mission to raise some funds for charity to give something back.
“We saw first-hand the amazing work that Thunder Foundation are doing, giving 22 children and their families education, food, clean water, healthcare and a chance in life.
“We may not raise much but the aim is to hit £1000 but every little helps and makes the pain of Kili worthwhile.”
