THE GREEK Islands are without a doubt one of my top all time favourite holiday destinations and I cannot help but go back year after year.

There is just nowhere quite like it – stunningly beautiful destinations each offering a somewhat simple yet tranquil retreat.

I’m not sure if it’s the fabulous food, friendly people, stunning scenery or the beautiful olive groves but there is just something that has certainly captured my heart.

TRANQUIL: Paxos

Each Greek Island is unique even though they are often separated by the narrowest of channels.

Here are just a few of my favourites:

Paxos: ideal for those seeking a quiet and relaxed holiday in the most stunning surroundings free from mass tourism and development. The island of olives welcomes visitors who return year after year.

Even at the height of season this remains a peaceful island where it is possible to explore and discover shaded paths down to hidden coves.

Paxos can be very easily twinned with Lefkada or Meganisi.

Lefkada: known as the ‘white island’ with rugged mountains, green valleys, glorious beaches and tranquil bays, it offers so many worlds in one.

You will find a little more to do on this island but still truly beautiful and a great location to explore.

Meganisi: meaning “The Great Island” is actually one of the smallest. This is the true Greece found only a few nautical miles away from the bustle of Lefkadas main port Nidri.

Meganisi is a haven for walking along virtually traffic-free lanes, exploring hidden coves and quiet beaches or finding some shade amongst an olive grove.

Not forgetting Ithaka: An island of hidden coves, green mountains and secret valleys. Just 4km from Kefalonia’s east coast, it is simply stunning if you are looking for a sleepy island holiday.

Most accommodation on these smaller islands is villa/apartment style and quite frequently the most common form of travel is by boat!

So if all inclusive isn’t your thing and you are looking for an idyllic location, like to mingle with the locals and experience the true side of Greece then the Greek Islands are definitely for you.
