A fresh start – September arrives

Local cornet player and brass tutor Mark Rodgers gives us an insight into the world of Brass Bands with his column Brassed Off

SEPTEMBER IS here and our banding movement will be getting back on its feet.

I should imagine most bands will have had a rather quiet time over the past six weeks. With much deserved holidays and spur of the moment breaks creating holes, or even gaping voids, in bands at rehearsals, it only makes sense to have a shut-down period. I think even the most fervent ‘bander’ will admit they could do with at least one week off.

Interestingly, some players actually combine their hobby with their vacation. August sees three renowned Summer Schools held in Sussex, Wessex and Swansea. These weeks include rehearsals and concerts, tuition from the finest players in the UK, ensemble recitals, solo competitions and even Whit Friday-style March Contests.

All these combine with some enjoyable socialising and provide an opportunity to meet other musicians from all over the nation and from overseas, creating some great memories.

Week -ong courses are also held by the National Youth Brass Bands of Great Britain, Wales and Scotland (who have independent bands as well). There is also a National Children’s Brass Band for the younger upcoming talent. Many local players have featured in the ranks of these bands over the years and have used the experience to go on to bigger things.

While on the subjects of banding’s re-awakening and of young brass players, I am suddenly aware of the very important influence September has on our movement. Once the Autumn school term is underway, brass lessons will resume in most of our schools and a new batch of budding students will be making their first noises. Hopefully these noises will soon become music.

Within a few years, some of these players could become the next generation from Saddleworth to play at the highest level. Anything is possible and it really is an exciting prospect.

Our local Youth Bands will be hoping for an influx of new, eager players to come along as they start the annual consolidation that is required after the inevitable loss of older players to University. Delph Youth Band will soon be losing several long serving, key players and we are optimistic our Recruitment Day will interest both beginners and more experienced youngsters to join the band. (Saturday, September 28 at 10.30am – 12.30pm at Delph Band Club. For further info: 07970 735825)

September can hopefully be a fresh start for us all, bringing good fortune for all our local bands.
