Angler shares stories in new book

SPRINGHEAD ANGLER Dr Steve Rogowski is hooked on pike fishing!

So much so that the 63-year-old, who fishes mainly on local reservoirs and Yorkshire rivers, has already written two books about the subject and has another set to be published this summer.Sport angling

And as the photograph shows Dr Rogowski, a social worker who is based at Royton Town Hall, has caught the odd whopper. This one was reeled in at Ogden Reservoir, Milnrow.

His latest book will be entitled ‘The Incompleat Piker’ and Dr Rogowski refers to ‘incompleat’ in terms of his failure to catch a thirty pounder which would allow him to join the elite of the piking world.

The book offers a piking autobiography and stories as well as featuring photos and snippets from more well-known and ‘compleat’ pikers along with tips on methods and techniques and pike waters.

Dr Rogowski, who began angling as a child with his father, explained that back in 1991 on only his third attempt at pike fishing he almost achieved the feat – landing one weighing 29lb 7oz at Rhodes Lodge, Middleton.

He said: “I have since caught a lot weighing over 20lbs, but never managed to land a 30lb one which is the goal for pike fishermen.

“The ‘incompleat’ bit references Isaac Walton’s seminal book ‘The Compleat Angler’ published all those years (centuries!) ago.

“After all, I have never caught a thirty pounder, do not do a lot of spinning/lure fishing, never fly fished specifically for pike, nor have I pike fished from a boat.

“However, my enthusiasm and passion for the sport remains undimmed.”

Dr Rogowski’s books ‘Pike Fishing in the UK and Ireland’ and ‘Pike and Freshwater Predator Fishing in the British Isles’ are both available from Amazon.
