Ann-Marie Banks, from Apollonia House Dental and Health Care in Grasscroft, gives you some tips on keeping your mouth healthy and fresh this spring.

SPRING IS in the air so it’s time to brush off the winter cobwebs and begin our spring clean.

Our bodies need constant maintenance to enjoy good health and our mouths are no exception. Our teeth need to be looked after to provide us with healthy teeth and gums.

Plaque biofilm can be very harmful for tooth enamel and gums as it is largely unseen socan remain unremoved, resulting in gum problems.

A healthy gum should be pink and firm. A gum that bleeds upon brushing or after eatingpoints to gum inflammation.

Thorough plaque removal is vital to contain this problem, known as gingivitis, to prevent the problem progressing to periodontitis.

To thoroughly remove the plaque biofilm we need to brush twice per day for two minutes, using either a small headed medium filament manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush.

The areas in between our teeth need to be cleaned with either dental floss or interdental brushes/aids daily, as advised by your dental professional.

You can visit a dental hygienist independent of your dentist prescribing or recommending a visit (direct access).

If your practice doesn’t have an in-house dental hygienist, you are eligible to visit a practice which has one and still attend your dentist for all other aspects of dentistry.

Gillian Mills and Ann-Marie Banks, hygienists at Apollonia House in Grasscroft, have a wealth of experience in treating and preventing gum disease.
