THREE was the magic number for Whit Friday regulars, Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band.
The National champions from West Yorkshire didn’t allow the rain or strong opposition prevent them marching off with a third successive Saddleworth & Oldham District Open Championship.
They celebrated crossing the Pennines by scooping more than £8,000 in prize money.
But it wasn’t all serious stuff as thousands of spectators throughout Saddleworth’s villages were entertained by the likes of Disco Brass, Chav Brass and Bad Ass Brass.
And bands came from far and wide to compete in the contests.
One of them was MG Buckten from Switzerland, with musical director Cedric Fuhrer, who were paying their first visit to Saddleworth for the ‘greatest free show on earth.’
Phil Beckwith, from Champion Brass who organised the band’s trip, said: “Thank you to everyone who supported the band on their first visit here.
“The weather wasn’t the best but they threw themselves 100 per-cent into the morning walks and also the evening band contests.
“They also thoroughly enjoyed their performance at the Civic Hall in Uppermill the following event as part of our Brass Fest 8 concert.”
Saddleworth & Oldham District Open Championship:
1. Brighouse & Rastrick — £2,500
2. Fairey — £1,000
