Brothers battle for Championship

MARTIN ORME wrestled the club championship from brother Mark at Saddleworth Golf Club.

The 40-year-old from Moorside admitted that family rivalry spurred him on to his seventh victory in the 36-hole scratch event as he won the event for a seventh time.

Martin, who works with Mark at the locally based family construction business MKM Fabrications, said: “You can imagine it was mentioned at work after Mark won last year.

“There was a bit more determination this year as I didn’t want to be beaten again by my younger brother.”

It was a landslide victory for Martin who had rounds of 71 and 71, which was one under par for 36 holes, for a 141 total which was nine shots clear of runner-up Marcus Wray whose 150 comprised 76 and 74.

Martin admitted that the win was a surprise because he is playing less golf than ever because he has a young family – two children aged three and 16 months.

He explained: “I thought my days of winning were long gone because, with a young family, I have not played much golf this year.

“It was been quieter at work in the last six weeks and, together with lighter nights, I have managed to get out more and it has made a difference. I hit a purple patch at exactly the right time.”

Martin says the outward nine holes of each round proved the cornerstone of the victory.

“I went out one and two under par respectively and let it slip both times on the back nine which are supposedly easier,” he continued.

Stephen Pullen claimed third place with 71 and 80 for 151

The club championship subsidiary, an 18-hole Stableford, was won by Guy Godwin with 44 points from Mick Heap (40pts) and Martin Heap (40pts).
