Championship success

NICOLA WHITE added to her impressive list of tournament medals by collecting silver for England at the TriFinance EuroHockey Championships in Antwerp, Belgium.

It was so nearly that elusive gold, though, as England were beaten by Germany in the final following a penalty shootout – where have we seen that before?

“For the senior players it was a case of another medal, but not the gold,” explained 25-year-old Nicola.

She continued: “Having reached the final, we desperately wanted to win the gold. We did really well, but the margins are so close.

“We have a new squad post Olympics and the group is a good mix of old and new and has flair and something different to the old one.

“We all get along well and things are looking good for the next Euros which are held in London in 2015.”

Nicola, who began her playing days at Saddleworth Hockey Club and whose grandmother lives in Dobcross, was a member of England’s 18-player squad.

In their EuroHockey pool matches England, who were seeded second to Holland, beat Spain and Scotland and lost 2-1 to Germany to claim a place in the semi finals.

It was a nail-biting match in the last four as England beat the Dutch, the tournament favourites, following another shootout after the game had finished 1-1.

Nicola’s medal haul comprises silver in the Champions Trophy and bronzes in the World Cup, Commonwealth Games and Europeans.
