DIGGLE PRIMARY School has thrown open its doors to excited pupils for the new term after a major revamp over the summer holidays – including the addition of 20 chickens.

Class 5 pupils drew up a business plan and budget for installing a chicken run in the playground and presented their ideas to governors before making share certificates to sell to parents.
The chicken run and shed were built by caretaker Mr Ryan and teacher Mrs Cocker before 15 chickens and 5 araucanas arrived in September.
Now, pupils of all ages will care for the chickens and collect the ‘Diggle Rainbow Eggs’ – named as they range in colour from brown and blue to green and white – to sell in boxes of six to parents.
Meanwhile, pupils returned for the new school year wearing smart brand new blue and white uniforms for the first time – introduced by headmaster Nigel Fowler who took over in January.
And they have been exploring the newly revamped school as all classes have been repositioned to create a better flow between age groups, with more intervention and reading spaces added.
A brand new indoor classroom has been created for early years provision, which opens out onto an outdoor classroom complete with alphabet bunting, sand pit, drawing boards and bikes.
The school’s store room has been transformed into a dedicated music room with African Drums and brass instruments while there is also an IT suite kitted out with 30 Apple Macs.

And further changes are already in the pipeline as funding has been secured to extend the wet space in the early years classroom and add new toilets.
Ms Stephanie Moore, deputy head, explained: “We were rated good by Ofsted in 2013 which is great but we are always striving to be better.
“Friends of Diggle School have done a lot of fundraising and everyone has worked so hard to change the store room into a dedicated music space, which is wonderful for the children.
“Diggle Hotel gave £500 to help build the outdoor space and it’s so nice to see the whole community getting involved to help us.”
Diggle Primary is holding Open Days for Early Years entry on October 1 and 13 but welcomes new parents to book to look around at any time.
