Charity team takes on Scafell Pike to help restore wildfire-hit Dove Stone

A TEAM from a local homelessness charity has raised more than £600 to help restore wildlife habitats at Dove Stone Reservoir after tackling one of England’s toughest mountain hikes.

Ten people, including people who have experienced homelessness, took on the nine-mile trek up Scafell Pike recently.

They were raising money for the RSPB’s work at Dove Stone following devastating wildfires over the summer.

Starting in Borrowdale, the group followed the Corridor route to the summit before descending via Esk Hause.

Despite challenging conditions, the team from Emmaus Mossley made it to the top, with the experience already inspiring thoughts of another adventure.

Marek, who took part in the hike, said: “The weather wasn’t perfect, but we did get some beautiful views of the hills. This walk was a very long way and difficult in parts. I love walking though and cannot wait for our next one.”

The money raised will support habitat restoration and help the RSPB prepare for future wildfires at Dove Stone Reservoir, where two major blazes destroyed between 800 and 1,000 hectares of vital habitat this summer.

The dramatic landscape, within the Peak District National Park, is home to a variety of wildlife, including dunlin, curlew and golden plover.

Kate Hanley, site manager at RSPB Dove Stone, said: “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of volunteers from Emmaus Mossley, who selflessly took part in this hike to raise money for RSPB Dove Stone. The money raised will help us look after the site and improve our preparedness to wildfire events in the future. We are extremely grateful to the volunteers for their support.”

The fundraising challenge builds on an existing relationship between the two organisations, with people supported by Emmaus Mossley previously taking part in volunteer days to help improve habitats at Dove Stone.

Emmaus Mossley supports people to overcome homelessness by helping them develop their confidence, self-esteem, skills and work experience as they work towards their goals.

Taking part in activities that benefit others is also an important part of life at the charity, with residents encouraged to support good causes and people in greater need.

Anyone wishing to contribute can donate through the team’s GoFundMe page.
