Clean sweep for badminton teams at championships

SADDLEWORTH School’s badminton teams completed a quadruple at the Oldham schools’ championships.

In the space of three eventful weeks, Saddleworth completed a clean sweep of the medal winning the Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 tournaments for both boys and girls.

And the reward for all four teams will be to represent Oldham in the Greater Manchester championships in early 2020.

KS4 Boys

In the KS4 boys’ event, Saddleworth entered two teams which won gold and silver after both defeated Newman, Radcylffe, The Oldham Academy North and Hume Grammar.

The ‘A’ team just beat the ‘B’ side 3-2 in the head-to-head clash, which considering there were three year nine boys playing up an age group was a fabulous achievement by the ‘B’ team.

The ‘A’ team’s Jack Lewis and Harley Edge, from ‘B’ were undefeated in both singles and doubles for their respective sides.

There were also great contributions from all eight players, the others being Finlay Hayden, Martin Johnson, Jac Taylor, Harvey Birch, Oliver Sleight and Max Godley.

The KS3 boys’ team of Harley Edge, Finlay Heydon, Joe George and Martin Johnson was undefeated in a team in their event at Failsworth.

KS3 Boys

Harley was undefeated individually, despite playing against a fellow Lancashire county badminton player from Hulme. The boys played singles and doubles, with a great sense of sportsmanship and competitive edge throughout the competition.

There was also a ‘B’ team of Lewis Jagger and James Sleight (both year seven) and Ed Shaw and Jack Rhodes (both year eight) as it finished fourth, narrowly missing out on medals.

The girls were not to be outdone as they won both their events.

The senior KS4 girls were represented by Caitlyn Lunn, Ciara Eckersley, Maisie Reading and Hannah Stewart.

The junior KS3 girls’ side comprised Maisie Mitchell, Jess Meek, Grace Leddy and Isobel Johnson.
