Clog and Garland dancers brighten up Uppermill with traditional Day of Dance

RHYTHMIC CLOGS and swirls of colour brightened up Uppermill as the Saddleworth Clog and Garland Dancers braved the wind and rain for their annual Day of Dance.

Spectators gathered outside Saddleworth Museum to see the team showcase their lively steps and garland dancing – not deterred by a delayed start due to the miserable weather.

They were joined by groups from across the North West including Rivington Morris, the Chorlton Cloghoppers, Westmorland Step and Garland Dancers, Persephone Women’s North West Morris, Milltown Cloggies and Thieving Magpie Morris.

Sarah Hardacre, the group’s teasurer, said: “It’s been a great day getting all the groups together to see each other’s dances and what we can learn from each other.

“Our group disappeared a little bit due to lack of members but over the last three or four years it have got it up and running again.

“Our mixture of clog stepping routines in a variety of styles and garland dances all contain an element of step dancing traditional to Saddleworth.

“We are always looking for new members to join us – both dancers and musicians –to have a good time as well as carry on the tradition.”

The Saddleworth Clog and Garland Dancers are a women’s team, dancing traditional North West clog stepping, and their history is based on mill girls who used to dance to celebrate the wakes.

The Saddleworth Clog and Garland Dancers are always looking for new women dance members and for both male and female musicians to join the team. They practice every Monday night 8pm-10pm at the Ebenezer Congregational Church in Uppermill.
