DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS who launched a coffee shop to help keep Dobcross Band and Bowling Club alive and kicking have helped raise more than £1,300 in four months.

The team of eight women, helped by their husbands, ran their first monthly coffee shop in February and have attracted more than 100 guests at each event so far.
Tasty treats on sale include drinks, cakes, toast, scones, teacakes, crumpets, and Eccles cakes – and beans on toast has joined the menu after requests for savoury snacks too.
All cakes are home-baked by the coffee shop team or donated by visitors, and all proceeds raised will be put towards the refurbishment wish for the 100-year-old club on Platt Lane.
And Val Hanson, one of the organisers, said they have been overwhelmed by the response as the events have provided a hit across the generations.
“It’s going very well so far and the community has been very supportive,” she said.
“We’ve had a huge range of ages in the people coming, from six months old to 85 years old.
“We hope we might be able to have leisure bowling and bands playing in the future, and we could set up tables outside when the weather is nice.”
The coffee shop also offers a comfortable place for people to relax and chat with friends old and new, and leave suggestions for club improvements.
The funds boost includes more than £775 raised at a successful ‘Songs from the Shows’ evening with ‘Musical Friends’.
The popular charitable singers performed solo and group songs from famous musicals, including Les Miserables, Oklahoma, and Mamma Mia to entertain guests at the club.
The coffee shop runs every first Saturday of the month from 10am until 12noon. The next events are July 6 and August 3. Anyone wishing to get to the club but unable to walk there can ring Val on 01457 876466 the day before to arrange transport. The club also has a function room available for hire – free for members – by calling 01457 873741.
