Decades of dedication celebrated at local housing association

STAFF members at First Choice Homes Oldham have been recognised for an extraordinary collective contribution of hundreds of years’ service.

Nearly 30 employees – whose careers span between 10 and 45 years – were honoured at an afternoon tea hosted at the housing association’s Union Street office.

The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Eddie Moores, joined Chief Executive Mark Gifford in presenting awards to those able to attend.

Long-serving FCHO staff members were honoured at the celebration

Among the longest serving was joiner Phil Sidlow, 61, who began his career in 1980 as a 15-year-old apprentice when housing services were still run by Oldham Council.

“I’ve stayed for 45 years because the company has always been good to me and the people make a difference – I’ve built some good friendships,” he said. “It’s also nice to be recognised for the role we play.”

Another milestone was reached by Chris Taylor, a plumber from Failsworth who has spent 40 years with the organisation since joining straight from school at 16.

Now mentoring apprentices, he said: “I’m a people person, I like meeting customers and doing different things every day – it keeps me motivated. The long service afternoon tea is absolutely brilliant. It’s nice to be recognised.”

Paula Taylor Smith, 58, a community services coordinator from Stalybridge, has held a variety of roles during her 30 years.

“Over the years, I’ve seen the move from Oldham Council and watched FCHO evolve and become the organisation it is today,” said the mother-of-two.

“I came as a temp and thought it was a stepping stone, but the head of homelessness services spotted my potential and offered me a permanent role. My work has been so varied, I can’t believe the time that has passed.”

During the event, Mr Gifford praised the staff whose dedication stretches back across decades of change in local housing services.

“We are here to recognise the extraordinary contribution of colleagues whose combined service adds up to hundreds of years of wisdom, experience, and effort. It is remarkable – not just for the length of time, but for the depth of commitment it represents.”

The organisation plans to make the long-service celebration an annual fixture after the success of this year’s event.
