Dedicated Saddleworth Barnardo’s fundraisers hit landmark anniversary

DEDICATED FUNDRAISERS are celebrating a landmark fifty years of raising money to help disadvantaged and abused children.

Saddleworth Barnardo’s have raised around £200,000 since they launched their helper group half a century ago.

Now, under the leadership of President Jean Illingworth, who is one of the founder members, they boast more than 20 members and are still raising considerable sums for the charity.

The group holds a monthly Luncheon Club at Old Bell Inn, Delph, where they celebrated their anniversary last month, as well as organising various fundraisers throughout the year.

Donations also boost their total – including a recent cheque for £1,200 presented by Oldham Choir from proceeds from their Christmas Concert in Lees.

The group’s treasurer Eve Crombie, who has been involved for more than 30 years, said: “We’re so pleased to have reached fifty years, with some of the founders still involved.

“A lot of members are in their 80s now so we are not as active as a group as we used to be and can’t do quite as much.

“We do need a few new members to help out and join the committee to make sure the group continues for another fifty years.”

Marjorie Bentley, one of founding members, added: “We have done so many different things over the years and made many friends as well as raising money for charity.

“I was having a look over a book Jean, our president, has kept with all the events and tickets and it brings back so many memories.”
