ENTERPRISING BOOKWORM Louise Crooks knew just what to ask for when a top publishing company offered a unique prize…

Penguin books launched an initiative to give their Twitter followers an opportunity to win a book from a selection of their top 21 popular, best-selling titles.
The publisher encouraged entrants to state the reasons for choosing the book and why they wanted it.
But mother-of-two Louise responded with a request asking the generous-spirited publisher for a copy of ALL 21 titles for Delph’s community-run village library.
And to her delight Penguin obliged and now the books take pride of place in their own special bookcase at the library in Millgate.
Louise, 36, a freelance copy writer, said: “I know it was a bit cheeky but Penguin loved the idea and contacted me almost straight away to say they would send all of them.
“I wanted to become a volunteer at the library to give something back to the community,” she explained.
“I’ve used the library for a few years and it felt right to help. I volunteer each Friday morning and help Deborah Curry, the librarian, to run a song and rhyming session for under fives.
“I spoke with Delph Community Association and set up a twitter account for the library to raise local support and awareness.”
She added: “I think the passion Phillida Shipp, the chair of the DCA, has for the library is truly inspirational. And Deborah is a wonderful librarian.
“The DCA do a fantastic job and their network of volunteers should be celebrated – without them we’d have no library.”
Phillida, DCA chair and library volunteer organiser, added: “Louise is terrific and the new books she received from Penguin are a marvellous addition to the library.”
Delph Library runs a book club on the third Thursday of every month at 6pm. Copies of the book are available in the library. The twitter account for the library is @delphlibrary
