A RECORD-BREAKING 1,680 people danced away the day and joined in Saddleworth’s biggest ever outdoor Zumba session at this year’s Party in the Park extravaganza.
Wake up Delph teamed up with Jager’s Dance and Events to launch the fun attempt at the legendary event at Delph and Dobcross Cricket Club last month.
And one of the organisers Phil Beckwith revealed the Zumba was an even bigger success than they had expected.
He said: “The Zumba was better than we could have ever imagined. There were 1,680 people there and I am sure all of them were taking part one way or another, which set a record for the area.
“Apart from one wet spell, the weather was brilliant and the whole event went very well.
“We’ve raised enough money to make Delph into a Christmas spectacle once more when we have our lights switch-on on November 29.”
A talented line-up of acts at the Party included a major coup as organisers secured former Status Quo drummer John Coghlan and his band John Coghlan’s Quo to perform.
Also performing were The Kaiser Monkey Killers, Black Garter, Robbie Williams tribute Danny Lowry and the Reggae man ‘Tanni Brown’.
There was a showcase of local talent from youngsters from Mahdlo and Delph Band closed the evening with a Last Night of the Proms finale followed by a fireworks display.
Phil added: “I would like to thank all the people who work so hard to help us, including the volunteers from Delph, the cricket club, our sponsors and supports and everyone else from across Saddleworth.
“We’re already looking forward to our anniversary event next year on September 19. We never envisaged doing it for so long and to say we have reached ten years is amazing.”
Wake Up Delph’s Christmas Lights Switch-on will take place on Saturday, November 29 from 4pm. There will be carols around the village Christmas tree, music from Oldham Scottish Pipe Band and Delph Band and fireworks.
