Delph woman fined for dumping waste

A DELPH woman has been prosecuted for fly-tipping in Saddleworth and Lees.

Jessica McDonagh, of Bakestones Avenue, appeared at Tameside Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to two duty of care offences.

McDonagh’s waste was found dumped on Ladcastle Road in Greenfield in February 2018 and also at Sunnybank, Lees in February 2017.

She was fined £150 plus £200 costs with a £30 victim surcharge.

McDonagh is among a group of people prosecuted by Oldham Council stepping up its campaign against the borough’s litter louts.

A spokesperson said: “We’ve recently prosecuted a number of irresponsible residents who think they can dump their waste where they want or leave others to clean up for them.

“Unfortunately, it’s you who continues to foot the bill as daily it costs £2,500 when you consider staff wages, running a van and waste disposal fees.

“Last year we picked up more than 1,500 tonnes of fly-tipped rubbish.

“Annually that is money that could be used instead to fill 40,000 potholes or support 2,500 elderly people so they can live independently at home.

“We are doing #ourbit by tackling the issue, focusing on more investigations and fines and engaging communities to take ownership.

“Recently we also agreed to invest an extra £600,000 into street cleaning annually.

“We now need you to do #yourbit by reporting fly-tipping, challenging bad behaviour where appropriate and getting involved.”

Cllr Arooj Shah, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, added: “It’s not the council dumping the rubbish and we don’t have the resources or the money to drive around picking up waste that people have dumped.

“Thankfully, the vast majority of you don’t fly-tip but for this problem to go away we need the selfish few to stop.”

Other offenders prosecuted were: Emaran Bajiwala, of Jai Guru Off Licence, Walkers Road, Oldham. Bajiwala had paid an unknown male to remove the waste. He was fined £200 with £560 costs and £30 victim surcharge.
