Delve into your family history at free events

DISCOVER YOUR family history with a series of free events run by Oldham Local Studies and Archives this spring.

The programme aims to offer the help and advice needed as family historians look back over their timelines.

As September 2014 marks 100 years since the beginning of World War One, there will be free workshops for those who want to compile the history of a First World War serviceman or servicewoman.

These workshops will take place on Saturday 8 February 2-3pmWednesday 26 February 2-3pm, Saturday 8 March 2-3pm and Wednesday 26 March 2-3pm.

For family historians there is a series of talks aimed at beginners with some knowledge of family history on Saturday mornings, beginning at 10.30am.

These include Family History: Getting Started on 18 January, Civil Registration: Births, Marriages & Deaths on 1 February, Using the Census on 15 February, Before Civil Registration: Parish Registers on 1 March and Recording Your Family Tree on 13 July.

For absolute beginners there are two introductory workshops on Tuesday, February 11 and Tuesday, March 11, beginning at 10.30am.

Family History advisors are available every Monday and Wednesday afternoons between 2pm and 4pm to help with your family history research.

The University of the Third Age Genealogy Group meets on the third Wednesday every month 10am-12pm, and everyone is welcome to come along.

Oldham Historical Research Group meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 7pm at Oldham Local Studies and Archives.
