Dementia Friends Champion Helen Morris offers some thoughts on activities and groups
WE ALL like the privacy of our own home and one of the latest ‘buzz words’ in my area of work is ‘isolated by choice’.
This is in recognition that some people living on their own, or sometimes with a partner, only feel safe and happy in their own four walls.

It poses a problem though because on your own you are less likely to get physical exercise, exposure to the outdoors and nature and the joy of human connection.
We take all these things for granted when well and socially active but isolation can creep up on any of us… family move away, neighbours uproot to sheltered accommodation or abroad and suddenly our circle of humans is sadly diminished.
This is cause for concern for many elderly people living on their own and even more of a problem for people living with dementia.
A part of the condition can show as a lack of initiative. It can be hard for me to get my running shoes on in a morning but very much harder for some people with dementia to even feel the urge to go outside and see the day.
That’s why I would seriously recommend seeking out local groups available to anyone with a diagnosis or memory issues. The evidence is that people who keep both socially and physically active live better, more fulfilling lives.
We are so lucky here in Saddleworth to have an excellent Carers Group which meets every second and fourth Friday in the hall of the Sacred Heart church in Uppermill from 10am till 12noon.
There are speakers and outings to enjoy and the organisers are truly supportive. To find out more call Kath on 01484 845350, email kathleen.e@btinternet.com or visit www.saddleworthmedicalpractice.com/carers
