Angela Mayall, from Designer Travel, looks at how travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer

Forget student backpackers spending their gap year on the other side of the world; it’s the over-50s who are emerging as the most adventurous and original travellers.

While some want to go long-haul and off the beaten track to exotic destinations like Borneo and Bolivia, others simply want something a bit different closer to home.

Independent research commissioned by Saga found that over-50s in the UK now account for the majority of the UK’s expenditure on travel and tourism.

Saga (a travel company that caters for the over-50s) are not surprised by this development as they have seen a growing demand for adventurous breaks over the past few years.

What is apparent is the need to create lasting memories and the desire for a more enriched travel experience. These once in a lifetime holidays span all corners of the globe – hiking Mount Kota Kinabalu in Borneo, walking in the footsteps of the Incas, exploring the marine life in the Galapagos Islands, or taking a journey on board the Orient Express.

After a lifetime of working hard and bringing up children these holidays are often the well-deserved reward.

We have also seen another growing trend towards multi-generational holidays. Grandparents are enjoying more active and longer retirements and top of the list are holidays for extended families.

There are some beautiful luxury resorts offering fantastic facilities and family fun for all ages. One of my favourites which has proved popular is Jumby Bay in Antigua – a tranquil island paradise offering a whole host of accommodation for larger families including some exclusive estate villas – perfect for that once in a lifetime luxury holiday experience.

For something a little different, explore the charm of Cape Town in South Africa before embarking on a Safari or would you prefer the fun and excitement of Disney’s Magic Kingdom and the Gulf Coast?

Adventure comes in all shapes and sizes – contact Angela for expert travel advice and personal recommendations.
