SADDLEWORTH School’s Under-11’s football team won a dramatic penalty shootout at North Chadderton to win through to the semi-finals of the Oldham Schools’ Cup.
North Chadderton took the lead following a well-executed move giving goalkeeper Ben Killan little chance.
It provided a wake-up call and the barking of orders from teacher Richard Meadowcroft on the touchline inspired the Saddleworth to score the next three goals, with excellent strikes from Ben Lamb and Charlie McManus, both from 20 yards, and Isaac Gater with a tap-in after some superb wing work from Tom Bennison.
It was a fabulous response, which was slightly undone just before half time when a lack of concentration allowed North Chadderton to score their second.
The second half was a lot tighter with Chadderton pushing for an equaliser, but the defensive work of Evan Parry and Killan keeping North Chadderton in front until three minutes from the end when they broke away and equalised and sent the game to penalties.
North Chadderton missed two kicks, one missing the target and the other saved by Killan who was named player of the match.
Saddleworth scored all four penalties from captain Tom Moule, Tom Bennison, Mason Young and Kieron Irwin and didn’t need the last one as they won 4-3.
